Gradual facial rejuvenation, guided by a physician

Looking for a refreshed appearance without making an immediate, dramatic change? Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator that may be an option for certain facial lines and folds. Its effects develop gradually, and treatment starts with a discussion of what it can realistically achieve for you.

At NeuroBeauty in Walnut Creek, all consultations and treatments are performed by Dr. Negar Sodeifi, MD, a neurologist. Discuss your goals, facial anatomy and medical history in a physician-only setting, with conservative treatment planning and natural-looking results as the aim.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA. It is a type of dermal filler commonly described as a collagen stimulator because it supports the body's collagen response over time. It differs from the hyaluronic-acid gels many people associate with the word “filler.”

Its FDA-approved cosmetic uses include certain facial wrinkles and folds, including cheek wrinkles and nasolabial folds—the folds between the sides of the nose and the corners of the mouth—in people with healthy immune systems. That does not mean it is appropriate for every facial concern or injection site.

Is Sculptra right for your goals?

A useful consultation starts with the change you want to see—not simply a choice of product. You may want to discuss Sculptra if you are considering a gradual approach and are comfortable allowing time to assess your response.

Questions to bring to your consultation include:

  • Is my concern a facial line, a change in volume, loose skin, or a combination?

  • What improvement would be realistic for my anatomy?

  • Would Sculptra, a hyaluronic-acid filler, another approach, or no treatment be the more appropriate choice?

  • What are the limitations, risks and likely commitment of the proposed plan?

Sculptra does not remove excess skin or replace a surgical facelift. This page covers facial treatment; it does not offer body contouring or imply that Sculptra should be used in the lips or under the eyes.

What to expect from Sculptra treatment:

  • Start with an individual assessment. Your medical history, previous facial treatments and expectations matter. A consultation is the place to decide whether treatment is appropriate, rather than assuming it is needed.

  • Allow for gradual change. Improvement develops over weeks. Fullness from swelling immediately after an injection is not the finished result. More than one session may be considered; the number of sessions and amount of product should be individualized.

  • Plan for recovery and follow-up. Swelling, bruising, redness or tenderness can occur. Recovery and response vary. Ask how treatment would fit your plans and follow the instructions provided by your treating physician. Before you leave, make sure you understand your aftercare, follow-up plan and whom to contact if a concern develops. A standard online massage or recovery routine should not replace the instructions given for your treatment.

Sculptra versus hyaluronic-acid fillers

Sculptra is itself a dermal filler. The useful comparison is with a hyaluronic-acid, or HA, filler—not with “filler” as a whole.

The materials and treatment goals differ. Sculptra's gradual collagen response is one consideration; an HA gel may be considered for a different contouring need. Neither is automatically the better choice.

Removal of filler material can be difficult, particularly with materials other than HA, so reversibility belongs in the discussion before treatment.

Explore our dermal filler overview for related options. A consultation can help you understand the differences without assuming that either treatment is right for you.

Sculptra and hyaluronic-acid filler compared by material, primary approach and timing. Both have risks; results vary.

Risks, limitations and reasons to defer treatment

Sculptra is a medical procedure with potential complications. Along with local reactions such as swelling, bruising and tenderness, delayed bumps or nodules, inflammation and infection can occur. Rare vascular complications can cause tissue damage, vision loss or stroke. Physician-performed care does not eliminate these risks.

Sculptra should not be used in people with allergies to its components, a history of anaphylaxis or multiple severe allergies, or a history of or susceptibility to keloid or hypertrophic scarring. Allergy to lidocaine or related local anesthetics also matters if lidocaine is added. Treatment in an area with active skin inflammation or infection should be postponed until it has resolved and is controlled. Safety has not been established during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Share your health history, medications, allergies and previous procedures with your physician.

Seek immediate medical attention for vision changes, signs of a stroke, unusual or severe pain, or skin that becomes pale or dusky during or after a filler injection. Report new or persistent lumps and other concerns to your treating physician.

These are selected considerations, not a complete consent discussion. Individual candidacy, expected benefit and the full safety information need review before treatment. Results vary, and no particular improvement or duration is guaranteed.
